Dynamite Speedway

Dynamite Speedway by Karen Gadient, 2015

Dynamite Speedway. Scanned markers, acrylic, and digital work.

Art therapy piece, just for my own restless mind. This one started as a digital doodle and eventually got more layers of scanned traditional media added to it. I’ve been doing a lot of experiments in mixing media; it’s a lot of fun.

Psycho-therapy is rather amazing—something like stirring up the bottom of an aquarium—chunks of the past coming up at unfamiliar angles, distinct and then indistinct. ― Robert Lowell

This one is clearly a doodle, but man, did I have fun doodling. Oh, it’s the holidays—and my artwork right now reflects the cheerful chaos of crowds and shopping and too much going on. Hope the holidays are treating you well!

Nerve Center

Nerve Center by Karen Gadient, 2014

Created primarily with Pencil by FiftyThree, an early Christmas present from my darling husband, David. I’m really enjoying the Pencil; it’s very comfortable and natural to draw with on the iPad. It’s quickly become my favorite stylus.

Dreams of Color

Dreams of Color by Karen Gadient, 2014

Dreams of Color. Created with Procreate for iPad and Corel Painter.

When I can’t sleep, I doodle on the iPad. And doodling, when you’re having a sleepless night, turns into a dreamlike activity.

After some rest, I brought the doodle onto the big screen and expanded upon it: creating this artwork. I guess if you have a box of crayons (digital or otherwise), insomnia can be as colorful as a dream.

Artists are just children who refuse to put down their crayons. — Al Hirschfeld
