Halloween: Colorful Pumpkin

Colorful Pumpkin by Karen Gadient, 2015

We’d gotten a cheerful orange pumpkin with plans to carve it, only―being in a different state―we missed the family carving event. So, I painted it.

The first two layers of yellow gouache didn’t quite do the trick, so I added layers of yellow and gold acrylic, which didn’t have the effect I wanted either. So, naturally… I decided to go nuts and splatter-paint the whole thing. Which actually worked out well and now it’s a bright addition to our Halloween decor. For now. Next week, it’ll be pie. 😉

Did you carve or paint a pumpkin this year? Have you ever done so?

  1. Looks great! Wouldn’t mind having one for my house. I haven’t carved a pumpkin but would like to, though I’m afraid I’d carve myself in the process. But I am planning on making some pumpkin pie for the weekend!

  2. I have a couple fake ones from Target that I’ve used the last many years. No worrying about candles or burning the house down 😉 I used to carve real ones, but it’s been ages.

    • It’s been ages for me too. David wanted to join in on the family pumpkin carving contest this year, but we weren’t in time. Painting worked out better, I think. He says he’ll paint one too next year. 🙂

  3. We have always carved pumpkins for Halloween….the worst part is getting those slimy seeds and fibers out so you can make a decent seat for a candle!

    • I haven’t done it in a while, but I clearly remember how yucky the ‘guts’ were. Assuming the paint isn’t too thick, I plan on cutting this one open at the start of November and reclaiming it as food. 🙂

  4. What a nice idea .very bright and colourful. Someone had an image of their face hand painted on a pumpkin. also a novel idea.

  5. Yay! Pumpkin art! Beautiful.

  6. I love this, I haven’t carved one yet (I did turn one into pie, yummy!) but I like what you’ve done. Original and fun and that’s what Hallowe’en is all about. Yay! Harlon

  7. Is that a Pollock Pumpkin? Perhaps a Jackson Jack-o-lantern? Sorry, couldn’t help thinking of our favorite abstract expressionist 😉

  8. Wonderful. dear Karen… Sending best wishes. Aquileana 🐉☀️

  9. Without a doubt the most attractive pumpkin I’ve seen, Karen

  10. What a fantastic idea! Love it! 🙂

  11. No doubt a new flavor of pumpkin arrived on the scene!!

  12. That must be the brightest pumpkin I’ve ever seen!! 😀 That’s great idea! I’m not much of fan of carved pumpkins or Halloween itself. And no, I’ve never carved a pumpkin, I’ve never eat pumpkin either. I remember my mum saying she had pumpkin pie as a child after all the carving of the pumpkins and Halloween parties, she said it didn’t really taste of much. It always reminds me of butternut squash. Does it have a similar taste?

    • Never eaten pumpkin? Hm. We just had some for dinner last night, in a curry! I suppose it’s a bit like butternut squash, but maybe more like an acorn squash. Pumpkin pie probably tastes more of pumpkin spice (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, etc) than of pumpkin itself. How about roasted and salted pumpkin seeds? I should send you some if you haven’t had any. 🙂

      • I’ve never had and acorn squash either, I hope they are larger than actual acorns?!! 😀 I like seeds, but they don’t like me, tend to cause a itchy tickly feeling in my mouth…not good. 😦 I’m okay with nuts, just don’t get on with seeds generally. I can eat sesame seeds okay, but only mixed with other food and in small quantities.
