Insomnia’s Daughters

Insomnia's Daughters by Karen Gadient, 2014

The other morning, I was watching Antiques Roadshow and someone had brought in a poster by Andy Warhol. I hadn’t thought about Warhol since the last Men in Black movie—where Andy Warhol turns out to really be an undercover MIB Agent (not much of a spoiler, I promise). So…

After coffee, I went upstairs and made changes to the portrait experiment I was working on. And the image with this post is what I did.

I haven’t been sleeping well lately. I kinda look like this in the mirror every morning, coffee or no. Fatigue is like a bad trip. Now that I’ve exorcised the sleepless eyes onto the canvas, maybe I can get forty decent winks.

Not being able to sleep is terrible. You have the misery of having partied all night… without the satisfaction. — Lynn Johnston

    Very good job ma’am.

  2. It’s really cool. 🙂 I hope you sleep, but this piece was worth some insomnia.

  3. The pictures gorgeous. I show my 8th graders how to do the Photoshop Andy Warhol picture and they’re always enthralled.

Hate not sleeping! Yuck. Rarely have that affliction, though I have others.

  4. fine title, drew me in …

  5. Very striking, and very Andy Warhol!! 🙂 I know that feeling of not sleeping well. I’ve had it most of my life, and yes it does feel a bit like having partied all night without the satisfaction of enjoying the party! I’m finding in my forties, it seems to annoy me less, not sure why. I’ve often got by on only 2 hours sleep. I’ve heard that a lot people as they get older actually need less lours of sleep – I’m hoping this is why, it could be a bonus for someone who never does get much anyway!

I hope your sleep pattern improves very soon. When you can’t sleep, do you stay in bed, or do you get up and do something – painting for example? I find doing something helps, lying in the dark is terrible. I don’t do lying in the dark these days! 🙂

Thanks. 🙂 Pretty sure I keep myself awake by thinking and thinking and thinking! It’s gotten better the last few days. Comes and goes. Sometimes I stay in bed and sometimes I get up and read–anything more than reading, and I never go back to sleep!

  6. Very Warhol! A colourful poster. I hope you sleep better. I was given a few tips for a peaceful sleep: fresh air in your room, tranquil ambiance in bedroom, not watching the news before bed…. I also listen to peaceful music and generally drift off. I hope you find a remedy soon. 🙂

Thanks! I think music would help. I just wouldn’t want to bother David headphone buzz. I may try it, though. 🙂

  7. I think this is really good, and it captures something beyond Warhol, something more postmodern. There’s a musical quality to the colors and to the face. The eyes hold a subtle jazzy, or acid rock, emotion. Feels like the Velvet Underground, maybe.
